This new program combines two current NDEC options for Boston area youth - the High School Diploma (HSDP) and HISET preparation; both options are summarized in the next section. The overall goal of the program is for students ages 16-24 to obtain a high-school diploma or equivalency. Comprehensive wraparound counseling services using a case-management model are employed to address the many needs of this population.
Youth Services: High School and HiSET
High School Diploma Program
The Alternative High School Diploma (HSDP) is a long-standing partnership with Cathedral High School. Students ages 16-21 who have already earned 10 high-school credits engage in coursework to complete their graduation requirements; Apex online learning classes are also available. All students participate in a College and Career Exploration course designed to assist in planning for postsecondary education or employment. The average class size is 12.
HiSET Preparation
This option will be offered for the first time on-site at the Joseph M. Tierney Center for students ages 16–24 residing in the Old Colony Development and neighborhoods of Boston. The average class size will be 12. Two class levels will be offered.
Pre-HiSET classes
Students will focus on the fundamental reading, writing, and math skills that must be mastered before beginning HiSET studies; computer skills will also be a key part of the curriculum. Students will work toward mastering the fundamentals both in classes and in individual tutorials. In addition, students will participate in visits to area colleges and develop a career plan.
HiSET classes
Students will work on the five HiSET test areas—Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science—and move toward HiSET testing and completion; computer skills will also be a key part of the curriculum. In addition, students will participate in visits to area colleges and develop a career plan.
