Adult Basic Education (ABE) and HiSET

The overall goal of the program is for students to reach their full potential in reading, writing, mathematics, and computer skills.  Most students have a short-term goal of attaining the HiSET, which will enable them to pursue both postsecondary education and employment. Students often collaborate with NDEC’s Workforce Readiness and Career Pathways program, which offers customized support and services.

Curriculum

Levels 1 and 2 cover basic skills in all areas. Level 3 students participate in the Student Achievement in Reading (STAR) program, which systematically addresses residual problems in alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Remediation in these areas prepares students to succeed in Level 4, which focuses on HiSET preparation for five tests (Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science); software such as IXL, Aztec, and Skills Tutor complement classroom instruction and promote independent learning at all levels. Significant class time is devoted to helping students master the organizational, research, and study skills required for both postsecondary education and career success.

Classes

The average class size is 15.  Instruction and learning take many forms: reading and discussion; lecture; small-group work; short projects; and review of selected videos connected to the curriculum. Volunteers frequently support the classroom teacher so that each student may receive the support needed to thrive. Additional tutorial support is also available outside of class. Students in this program have a wide variety of educational backgrounds, strengths, and challenges; the program strives to provide the many types of support that will help students to persevere.
